Help with childcare costs

Childcare may cost less than you expect.

Kidz.com is an approved OSCAR programme. Depending on your income, family size and circumstances, Work and Income may help with the cost of before-school, after-school and holiday care.

What it can cover

Support during school weeks and the holidays.

Eligible families can receive help with the cost of care. The subsidy is paid directly to the childcare provider.

Up to $6.72per hour, per child
Up to 20 hourseach week during term time
Up to 50 hourseach week during school holidays

Income guide

The limits are broader than many families expect.

The table shows the upper gross-family-income limits from 1 April 2026. Families below these limits may qualify for some assistance, but income is only one part of the assessment.

Who may qualify?

It is worth checking.

Work and Income makes the final decision, but these are the main requirements.

The parent or caregiver

  • Is the principal caregiver of a dependent child
  • Is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Is on a low or middle family income
  • Meets a qualifying circumstance such as working, studying, approved training, shift work, illness, disability or particular caring responsibilities

The child

  • Normally lives in New Zealand
  • Is attending school
  • Is under 14, or under 18 when the caregiver receives Child Disability Allowance for them
  • Attends an approved OSCAR programme for at least three hours a week

How to apply

Apply before care begins.

Work and Income recommends applying three to four weeks before you need the subsidy to start—especially for school holidays.

  1. Download and print the form
    Use the official Childcare Assistance application for Childcare Subsidy and OSCAR Subsidy.
  2. Complete your sections
    Work through the applicant and family information requested by Work and Income.
  3. Bring it to Ann
    Come into the office if you would like help with the form. Ann can work through it with you and complete the Kidz.com provider information.
  4. Submit the application
    Send the completed form and supporting documents to Work and Income.
